Klein Oak boys win state in 4×100 relay!

Congratulations to the Klein Oak boys 4×100 meter relay team on their 5A state championship this weekend in Austin. The team included Sonics member, Jontavous (J.T.) Smith, who is only a freshman! Watch the race video here.

Other Sonics members competing this weekend were Mikayla Banks and Imani Nave who ran for Klein High in the 5A girls 4×100 meter and 4×200 meter relays finishing 6th and 4th, respectively. Also, DeAnte Ford and his Fort Bend Ridge Point boys 4×400 meter relay team finished 4th in the 4A division.

Kim Duncan a finalist for College Athlete of the Year

Ex-Sonic athlete, Kimberlyn Duncan, is once again a nominee for a prestigious collegiate award. This time it is Sports Illustrated’s College Athlete of the Year.

As fans we can visit the site and cast our votes for Kim against some heady competition. Go Kim!

Sonics athletes qualify for Texas UIL track & field state meet

Congratulations to Mikayla Banks, Imani Nave, and Jontavis (J.T.) Smith who qualified for the Texas UIL track & field state meet to be held at the University of Texas in Austin on May 10-11. Mikayla and Imani will be representing Klein High in the girls 4×200 meter relay after finishing in 2nd place at last weekend’s Region II 5A meet in Waco. J.T. qualified as a member of Klein Oak’s 4×100 meter and 4×200 meter relay teams which finished 2nd and 1st, respectively, at the same meet.

Also worthy of mention is long-time Sonics member, Darwin Allen, who missed qualifying for state in the boys 800 meter run by the narrowest of margins. Running in the Region III 5A meet for Lamar High School, Darwin finished third in the finals with an excellent time of 1:53.89, but missed qualifying for the 9th spot on time by a mere 0.04 seconds!

UPDATE: The Klein High girls also qualified for state in the 4×100 meter relay by having the next fastest non-automatic qualifying time. Also, DeAnte Ford qualified for state as a member of Fort Bend Ridge Point’s boys 4×400 meter relay team in the Region III 4A meet.

For those athletes planning to attend the Visions track meet this Saturday in Pearland, please be there between 7:30-8:00 AM for group warm-ups unless instructed differently by one of the Sonics coaches.

Kim Duncan takes 100m title at Texas Relays

Former Sonic and LSU star, Kimberlyn Duncan, won the University/College Women’s division of the 100 meter dash at the annual Texas Relays in Austin, TX. Duncan, a 200-meter specialist, recorded a blistering time of 11.06 seconds (wind-aided 2.8 m/s). You can watch the race here.

Sonics to skip Top Flight meet

Head Coach Kenneth Jackson has announced that the Sonics will not be participating in the Top Flight Track Club meet this Saturday, March 30. So take this rare break opportunity to enjoy the holiday weekend with your families and we’ll resume next week in preparation for the Texas Stallions meet at Klein Collins High School.
