Four former Sonics athletes have graciously agreed to join the Sonics coaching staff this year and continue the proud tradition of “giving back”.
Grecia Bolton was the 2007 AAU Junior Olympics champion in the Young Women 100 meter dash. She then went on to run for the Houston Cougars as a scholarship athlete and went on to qualify for numerous appearances at the NCAA Championships.
Sandra Iwunze was the 2005 AAU Junior Olympics champion in the Young Women 400 meter hurdles. She later became a scholarship member of the Texas Tech women’s track and field team. She was twice the Big 12 Conference champion in the 400 meter hurdles, set school records in both the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdles, and was a member of their 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.
Jessica Ohanaja won AAU Junior Olympics titles in the 100 meter hurdles in 2002 and 2003 in the Intermediate Girls and Young Women’s divisions, respectively. She later became one of the most successful hurdlers ever in the LSU Tigers program earning All-American honors seven times. She also competes professionally for the Nigerian national team.
Davina Orieukwu was the Texas 4A girls state champion in the discus throw in 2006 for Westbury High. After graduating, she joined the Ole Miss Rebels track and field team specializing in the discus and shot put.
